What exactly is Ceramic Coating?

Ceramic coating, in essence, is a liquid that is applied to most painted surfaces of cars and trucks to protect their paint job and provide various benefits. This protective layer is made up primarily of silicon dioxide and uses microscopic particles to create a strong bond with the surface it is applied to. Ceramic coatings have gained popularity recently in the car detailing space due to their exceptional durability and long-lasting effects.

The primary purpose of ceramic coating is to protect vehicle paint from chemical damage, UV rays, oxidation, and other damaging elements. These coatings form a hydrophobic and self-cleaning layer, which means water and dirt slide off more easily.  This reduces the need for frequent washing and maintenance. Additionally, the hydrophobic properties can help prevent water spots and mineral deposits from adhering to the paint.

The application process of ceramic coatings requires proper preparation and a high level of attention to detail. Before applying the coating, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned and decontaminated. We do this by giving the vehicle a thorough decontamination wash and using a surface prep solution. The paint must also receive a paint correction with a machine polisher to remove any fine scratches, swirls and remaining residue.

Once the surface is ready, we can apply a ceramic coating by installing it in small sections. It quickly bonds with the paint on a microscopic level. After curing for a specific time, usually 24 to 48 hours, the coating forms a protective and glossy layer.

One of the biggest advantages of ceramic coatings for cars is their impressive durability. While traditional wax and sealants provide protection for a few months, ceramic coatings can last for years if maintained correctly. While there is some up-front investment, this durability makes them a cost-effective choice for many vehicle owners, as they can avoid frequent reapplications.

Ceramic coatings also enhance the visual appearance of the vehicle. The coating creates a deep, reflective shine that gives the paint a “wet” look. This is often a noticeable difference from a non-coated car and we’re sure you’ll love the look of your coated car.  Moreover, the coating’s anti-static properties repel dust and pollen, helping the surface stay cleaner for extended periods.

While ceramic coatings cannot provide protection from larger impacts, light scratches or swirls marks, they do provide significant protection from a variety of hazards that cause paint damage. This includes things like chemical damage from bird droppings or road chemicals, UV rays and oxidization. If you’re looking for protection from more harsh road hazards such as rock chips or scratches, paint protection film is the solution you’re looking for.

It’s important to understand that not all ceramic coatings are created equal. There are different grades and formulations available on the market, each offering varying levels of protection and longevity.

Professional-grade coatings, like the ones we use here at Denver Auto Shield, can only be applied by trained technicians due to their difficulty of application. The DIY ceramic coatings on the market are generally easier to apply, but will also yield results that do not perform as well as professional coatings.

While ceramic coatings provide substantial benefits, they are not without limitations. One common misconception is that they eliminate the need for regular car maintenance. While they can reduce the frequency of washing and offer protection against certain elements, they are not a substitute for proper car care and maintenance. Washing your vehicle regularly is still necessary to remove stubborn dirt and contaminants that may accumulate on the surface over time.

In conclusion, ceramic coating is a state-of-the-art protective solution that has revolutionized the automotive and surface protection industry.

With its ability to form a durable, hydrophobic, and visually appealing layer, it provides long-term protection for your car or truck. However, it’s important to choose a reputable and high-quality product. You should also remember that regular maintenance is still necessary to keep the coated surface in good condition. Ceramic coatings can offer an outstanding return on investment, preserving and enhancing the appearance of the coated vehicle for years to come.
